Bubbling Lava Lamp

Bubbling Lava Lamp

Problem:
It all started with just 2 simple ingredients to get my homemade lava lamp to work and just a little bit of heat and light. Each element helped create this lava lamp to become something cool and exciting to look at. But what really made this lamp turn into a real working lava lamp? Adding more dye affects the amount of bubbles in a lava lamp.

Hypothesis:
Adding more dye affects the amount of bubbles in a lava lamp.

Experiment:
1. Adding the same amount of water and oil to each of the beakers
2. adding 3 drops of dye to one of the beakers
3 have a flashlight underneath each of the beakers for a full affect
4. See the difference in each of the lamps

Materials:
1.  2 beakers (same size)
2. Any kind of oil
3. Water
4. Food coloring
5. Flashlight
6. Seltzer
Observations:
Lava lamp 1:   The lamp that doesn’t have the coloring has a smaller number bubbles than the one with dye.

Lava lamp 2: The lamp with the dye has more of a colorful effect with the heat and the bubbles. When we first added the seltzer, the gas bubbles had carried the water on the bottom to the top because it became less dense. Water and gas is less dense than oil. When the gas bubbles popped, the water became more dense.

Using seltzer added the bubbly effect rather than just having water on top of oil with food coloring.

Data:
For when we did the experiment with just water, oil and seltzer we got less of a reaction with the bubbles. This did not give it a lava lamp effect to it. When we had the experiment with the food coloring, water, oil, and seltzer it had more of a gas effect. having the bubbles start out big to the top and getting smaller as it decreased.
Conclusion: Having dye in the lamp has more of a colorful effect on the bubbles and how dense it got. Then having just water, oil and seltzer. Giving it more of a lava lamp effect.

Matter and Energy

Authors Note: In this project I tried to focus on combining more than one topic in a project. At first I was interested in figuring out all the kind of energy around us. After reading and researching I decided that I wanted to go more in depth with matter and energy. Looking more into energy, I found out information that I never knew about. Realizing that energy is all around us.

5 Themes of Geography

Location: There are 2 different type of location. One is called Absolute location and the other Relative location. Relative location is a place in relation to another place, while Absolute is the exact latitude and longitude of a place.

Place: The human and physical characteristics of a location. Some examples are culture, population, climate, land masses.

Movement: The travel of people and goods, such as trading. Examples of movement is immigration, airplanes, and the internet.

Region: Region is the border or surrounding the location and how they interact. Mexico and Canada are in the same region as the United States, forming North America.

Human Environment Interaction: How humans interact with the environment. An example is pollution, people throwing their trash in bodies of water and just plain littering.

 Ireland

Location: Ireland is west of the U.K., North of Spain and France. Which is the relative location. Ireland’s absolute location is 14 degrees north and 67 degrees south.

Place: Ireland’s main language is English and Gaelic. They are known for the Blarney Stone, Blarney Castle, and the Cliffs of Moher. These features are human characteristics. Ireland’s physical characteristics are their rivers and their lowlands, high, and middle. The main religion is Catholicism.

Movement: The travel in Ireland is pretty much the same as it is here. The one thing with car travel there is that they don’t have a lot of roads and highways which makes gas and cars more expensive.

Human Environment Interaction: People in Ireland grow a lot of crops which help the soil, and makes food for animals. When Ireland gets lots of rain their land gets flooded and destroys most of their crops, reducing food. Region: Ireland is a part of the British Isles, which is a region that contains islands that lie on the northwest coast of Europe.

Through The Years Of Band

March 6th was a very memorable time for me. The seventh and eighth grade band had put our spring concert on. Each Year putting on two new a beautifully done concerts bring joy to me and to hopefully the audience too. I love getting to know a new piece of music each winter or spring for our annual winter and spring concerts. I like doing band right now and I hope I carry this on for awhile.
When the first seventh grade piece started to play which was Knights Of Destiny, I got a little jumpy because at some moments I didn't know what was going to happen. Especially when we started to play our next piece our next piece Space Journey. I had a lot of shivering going on while playing and listening to this piece. When the flutes, (which I play) started to play their own little solo, in the second movement I was very speechless. The way that we played was magnificent. At the end the band had played a piece called Zoom! It was very fast moving and exciting to play and listen too. Plus was one of the longest pieces. If I had to pick one piece that I didn't enjoy to play or listen to as much as the others it would be Abandoned Treasure Hunt. In some of the sections it was very well done but got very annoying at sometimes. But was very well done.
The eighth grade part of the concert was very good in my opinion. All of the songs were very well done and very enjoyable to listen to. I found that my Favorite piece through their portion of the concert had to be Mars. It was very upbeat and entertaining to listen to. As I saw through the band there were a lot of flutes which is very hard to balance with the rest of the band because of their high pitch sounds. The Eighth grade band did very good balancing their sounds throughout the band. Each piece left me wanting more of them.
Sometimes I can find my self just playing random notes at home thinking that I am playing for royalty. I always enjoy showing my friends and family my new music and playing for them. Band has been a big part of my family because my uncle was a band director for his school in Illinois. When I first set my eyes on the flute I knew I had to play it, even though my first sound that I made out of it wasn't perfect.  In conclusion I am dedicated to my flute and I hope I carry on the tradition of playing an instrument to my kids too.

The Unsinkable

Authors Note: In this piece I did a stream of consciousness. At first I had no idea what to write but then I sat down and thought really hard about a subject. I thought of this cruise story because I was watching the Titanic a couple of days ago and reminded me of it.

As the cruise ship sailed through rough water, and all the passengers were comfortable seated, we sailed out of the harbor and into the open sea. The waves were strong, but the wind was even stronger, allowing us to steer our way along the coast, following the outline of the shore. Each minute the wind and  the waves got stronger and stronger until the ship gave up. The Ship was slowly sinking in the freezing shinny water as we yelled for help. All nightmares of what could happen came to reality.

The screaming of all passengers on the ship frightened me even more than expected. Yet I was prepared to die this very moment. Everyone clinging on to the railings of the ship hoping not to go down. I was eight years old at the time so i didn't exactly know what was going on. All thoughts were racing through my tiny brain thinking if this is for real or just a dream.

My mother grab my hand and took me to the front of the ship which was peeking so high in the air you could touch the clouds. Seeing most people grabbing on to anything they could find to support them selves up but failing to hold their weight and falling into the crystal iceberg cold water.

The captain ordered everyone to find as many life jackets as they could and put them on themselves and loved ones too. From the height were I was you could see everyone in the frigid water gasping for help as they slowly started to drowned. While I was looking at this terrifying sight, my mother told me to close my eyes and imagine that i'm back home with my friends playing in the park. She was hoping that this would distract me long enough till we found a life boat ourselves. She had dragged me along searching high and low for any kind of safety jacket or boat but luck did not struck us.

We had finally found an old lady who was struggling to get into a small life boat that was a bout fit for four. Her and my mother made an agreement that is she helped the old lady into the life boat then she would let us come along. The boat plopped into the freezing ocean and we headed straight north, hoping that we  would come along land eventually. As we sailed out I could still here the screams and yelps for people to come save them. The old lady and my mother told me just to close my eyes and fall fast asleep.

I awoke by the screaming of a young man's voice asking if anyone was in the boat. My Mom had squealed as load as she could and answered back "Were over here, follow my voice." The man did so and eventually putting us on his bigger fishing boat. We all had wondered what a fisherman was doing way out in the middle of the ocean, but we didn't care, as long as it brought us to safety. It took us about 2 days to finally find the  bay of Boston Massachusetts .  Each of us took slow careful steps off of the rocking boat. We were relieved to see all of the shinning towers of  Boston but I was still in shock about the sinking of the ship. My mom had told me that the people are in a good place and you now have many angels looking over you. I felt a little better but knowing that me, Ally Johnson could have been killed on that ship made me appreciate what I have and I will always forever love my life and everyone in it.

The Sacrifice

Authors Note: It was hard at first to come up with this one great topic to come up with, but my hard  thinking payed off. My Idea for this story was to try put me in Army wife's perspectives. At first it was very difficult to put myself into their shoes but after awhile it felt easy to to write about it. In this writing piece I tried to write as if I was an army wife, which was very difficult for me to do.

Each day waking up and not seeing your husband is the most heart breaking feeling. It gets difficult once other parents ask my children where their dad is and they have to say "dad is away in the army." And all the parents give them sympathy.  It's also really hard for my children that their dad always misses their birthdays, concerts, and parent conferences but I tell them that their dad is not going to make it.

My husband and I don't get to talk to each other very much, because their base does not have telephones. So the only way of communicating is through Skype, even though the picture is blurry the kids and I still get to talk to him. Which they appreciate very much. We only get to skype him once every few weeks. That isn't very much but at least we get to see him. And that is all that matters to us.

I never imagined being an army wife when I was younger but I have learned so many things from it. Throughout my life I always took freedom for gran tit, because I never had any of my family members in the army. Now I know that at any time of the day my husband could get killed in battle. So my kids and I pray for him every night before we go to bed. Now I know what is going on in war without having to watch the news. Every army gets informed with what is going on in war so we know what's happening.

When that one day happens were the sun is shinning down on us and the sky is as blue as the sea I know that this is the day where it all stops. All of the crying of hoping that he every father comes home to their children. And nervousness that we don't lose the war. And most importantly that we don't lose him. The thought of not seeing him for the rest of our lives would destroy our lives forever. And I'm sure any of would take that one sacrifice to save him.
